Russian Scientists Caught Illegally Mining Bitcoin at Work, Fined $7,000

October 1, 2019
A trio of nuclear scientists working in a Russia nuclear lab were fined $7,000 for using a supercomputer at their workplace to mine Bitcoin.

The trio had also specifically designed software to mask mining tasks that were used on the computer. The supercomputer could conduct one petaflop (equal to 1,000 trillion operations per second), making the effort lucrative.

The scientists were initially outed in February, but considering the price of Bitcoin, their legal fees may be miniscule in comparison.
